A profile of bioinformatics companies
Bioinformatics companies share a few general characteristics. They are usually very young companies founded during the “start-up” era of the 1990’s. Currently, they offer services to niche markets, i.e. the software is mainly designed for pharmaceutical and life science researchers – not for general costumers. Many bioinformatics companies are spin-offs from biotech and pharmaceutical industry giants, or from university research groups, or are part of a company that also maintains “wet labs”, i.e. biological laboratories that use traditional experimental and analytic methods. The bioinformatics industry is currently in a state of flux. As the number of bioinformatics companies grows, the market consolidates, and “older” companies reach a certain level of maturity, bioinformatics companies may find themselves shifting away from an entirely R&D-based company to a more marketing and PR-driven company. Here you can find the most important bioinformatics companies and services.
